Breeding Objectives
Our focus is on producing flock rams for the prime lamb industry across Queensland and northern New South Wales.
Over many years our breeding ewes have been selected and bred to do well and breed well on a light to moderate diet and are rarely supplemented, only in the worst of dry times. The ewes with lambs at foot are then put on pasture or crops after lambing. Even under these management practices our ewes will normally average above 150% lambing rate.
Structural soundness to cope with the vast areas of some of our client’s properties is a focal point in our minds along with the many and varied environments our rams are operating in.
High growth rate is also a central focus for us and as one of our key objectives it ensures our rams will produce lambs that will reach market weights earlier. From a client perspective the less time on the ground for lambs the greater potential for increased profit.
We always select new stud sires that will provide improvements in eye muscle area and carcass shape. With this focus we are also seeing improvements in our dressing percentage across all progeny.
As stud breeders we are well aware of the changes that Poll Dorsets have been through in the last 30 years and are very keen to stabilize the true dorset type in our flock. This will aid in delivering a highly repeatable carcass, one that will pass on to prime lamb producers the repeatable lamb type that Poll Dorsets are renowned for. All of these factors will increase the market advantage that Poll Dorsets provide.
Poll Dorsets are renowned for their versatility and ability to breed in all seasons and to breed lambs for all markets. Our rams will provide you with the full range of opportunities for your prime lamb enterprise. We have rams well suited for the sucker lamb market through to rams that can breed lambs for the heavy export market.
Key objectives that will be future drivers for all Poll Dorsets are going to be:
